This poem is the result of contrasting my impression from 50 years ago with my impression while watching the first SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch last year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"verse\">\n<strong>Then and Now<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The dawn of monster rockets<br \/>\nAll steel plates, bolts, and wings<br \/>\nPatches and rivets and ridges<br \/>\nThunder, ice, paint, and flame<br \/>\nShaken off a Frankenstein&#8217;s<br \/>\nMonster that unfolds itself slow<br \/>\nSo slow and stretches&#8211;rumble<br \/>\nAnd shake&#8211;before inching into<br \/>\nthe sky.<\/p>\n<p>Nerdy fellows bathed in pale light<br \/>\nHundreds of flickering CRTs<br \/>\nTracking every pop, crackle, boom<br \/>\nAnd groan&#8211;Orbit plotted<br \/>\nmile by straining downrange mile<br \/>\nAcross a pasteboard world of<br \/>\nBlinking lights with crackling static.<\/p>\n<p>Gives way to sleek and white<br \/>\nMadison Avenue logos<br \/>\nBranding and music and YouTube<br \/>\nA pinpoint, high definition ballet<br \/>\nOf missions countless<br \/>\nWhite gleaming rockets or<br \/>\nBurn-scarred, brawny cores<br \/>\nThat tank up, go again, and<br \/>\nThen dance down to repeat<br \/>\nforever.<\/p>\n<p>The engineers calmly track the<br \/>\nhundred LCDs, graphics and<br \/>\nvoice-overs&#8211;&#8220;Falcon 9 is go<br \/>\nfor flight&#8221;&#8211;hugs and cheers<br \/>\nApplause signs and high-def<br \/>\nA tight shot of the smooth skinned<br \/>\nMissile&#8230;youthful ascent.<\/p>\n<p>&copy;&nbsp;2019 William Herndon, All Rights Reserved<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have very dim memories of the Apollo program, but the image that really sticks with me is of the engineers\/technicians that manned positions in Mission Control.
